A large, suspicious fire broke out Thursday morning at a vacant industrial site near Kenton and Burt streets next to the railroad tracks, marking the second blaze in about 10 months as fire chief Jacob King said the fire likely was caused by human actions because utilities were off and no lightning struck, and firefighters and police reported no injuries.

Springfield’s plan to switch from fixed routes to an on-demand micro-transit system is delayed as contract talks continue, leaving SCAT drivers and riders uncertain about future job security and service changes. A soft launch is scheduled for July 15th with a two-week overlap to help transition passengers+ the new service, which aims to offer direct-to-door rides at similar fares to the current system.
Springfield's income tax revenue has stayed flat after years of post-pandemic growth, so officials plan to limit spending until new revenue from a shift to RITA and residential development boosts the general fund in 2026—officials noted that the end of temporary federal funds has increased the strain on daily operations. The city will hold public budget meetings in November—community members can offer input during these sessions.

“This newsletter is great. I don't usually take the time to read the news, but this makes it quick and easy. Wonderful idea and wonderful execution. Because of this newsletter I bought 88 lbs of dog food and 30 lbs of cat food for the local animal shelter that otherwise I wouldn't have known they needed.”
“Good luck with the newsletter. It doesn't take long to skim the headlines which is what I prefer. Happy New Year!”
“Thank you so much for your generosity to local non-profits (also we LOVE the daily newsletter, you out out an impressive product!)”

“Good morning! I just wanted to share that I really enjoy this daily newsletter and here's why. 1. I like seeing the focus on just local news. Allows me to quickly know what's impacting my community. 2. This seems to cover a nice range of topics to expand my knowledge. 3. I enjoy the Events section, especially as a weekend is approaching so I can see if there are any activities to take my young family to. I usually have feedback for improvement but I really can't think of any! I so appreciate your team for putting this local news out!”
“I live out of state. I like: the writing, the clear brevity, and especially the fact that you put heart into your descriptions. It's short and relevant. Thank you.”

I appreciate you keeping it on your list of upcoming events in the community this month, but unfortunately we can't sell any more sponsorships or individual tickets. Thank you for your service ---I feel our paid advertising with you helped put us in the sold out status sooner than expected!”
“I'm actually really loving the newsletter. A lot of us in the community feel the traditional news providers have gotten pretty negatively biased, so it's truly refreshing to see news that's presented in bite-sized pieces but also isn't hinting one way or another. Very much appreciated in today's climate. Thank you for providing something new and refreshing for the city!”
