CRIME NEWS

  • Former Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin pleaded guilty to a lesser OVI charge—receiving a fine and time served—after he was arrested on Dec. 18th, 2024, for traffic violations and signs of intoxication.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Deondrae Poole, 23, pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated murder for fatally stabbing Darrin Pollock in a Meijer parking lot on Dec. 3, and he was sentenced to 15 years to life with a $15,000 fine while being conveyed to the Ohio State Penitentiary.  WHIO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northeastern Local Schools has named Lori Swafford as the new principal of Kenton Ridge High School and Aubree Kushmaul as the new principal of Northeastern Elementary School for the next school year—Swafford will replace retiring John Hill while Kushmaul comes from her role as assistant principal at Kenton Ridge.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Springfield is planning to build about 3/4 mile of new sidewalks along Bechtle and Hillcrest to help pedestrians move around safely. The project is expected to cost about $1.54 million and use local and federal funds — ODOT is accepting public comments until May 31.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Springfield’s SCAT bus system will shift to a micro-transit model by July as city officials say the fixed routes do not meet residents’ and employers’ needs. A public forum to discuss the new ride-sharing service is set for May 5 at City Hall—residents can ask questions during the testing phase before the full launch.  Springfield News-Sun
