CRIME NEWS

  • Operation Rebirth administrator Emilio Valdez pleaded not guilty to third-degree felony counts of strangulation and endangering children after allegedly choking a 13-year-old student on Feb. 26, was fired on March 31— the boarding school, located on a 17-acre farm near St. Paris, has named a new director and will reopen in the fall.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill that would ban unlicensed adult use marijuana products passed in the Senate and is headed to the House for further debate—its move comes after a doctor from Dayton Children’s Hospital said ER visits for kids exposed to unlicensed products jumped by over 570 percent from 2019 to 2023.  WHIO
  • The city of Springfield will remove an encampment at Snyder Park on Monday, May 5, because health and safety concerns have grown due to unsanitary conditions and trash buildup. Case managers and clinicians will help about 10 unhoused residents transition to shelters (Sheltered Inc., Norm’s Place, and Hartley House) while park cleaning may take up to two months.  WYSO
  • Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on May 4th from sunrise to sunset to honor the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service — he had previously ordered flags to be raised to full-staff on April 28 after three funerals.  WDTN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Area hospitals at Kettering Health and Premier Health earned A safety grades from the Leapfrog Group while Mercy Health hospitals received lower ratings of C and B. Mercy Health said older data and survey challenges may not fully reflect current safety practices — patients are advised to consult their providers for guidance.  Springfield News-Sun
