Good morning, Springfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 24th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Greenon teacher Tom Jenkins was named to the National Teacher Hall of Fame on CBS Mornings and will be inducted June 20 at Emporia State University along with four other teachers (he received a $20,000 award that also benefited his district).  Springfield News-Sun
  • Global Impact STEM Academy held a ribbon cutting today at its new Upper Academy facility on Clark State College's campus, where students in grades 10 to 12 will earn college credits and train for jobs. The academy exceeded its enrollment target for sixth and seventh grades and plans a phase II building east of the current site to serve grades 9 to 12 by fall 2027 — a step that will boost local growth.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hundreds of Ohio law enforcement agencies are stepping up seat belt enforcement in the statewide Click it or ticket campaign this Memorial Day weekend as millions travel for cookouts and vacations. Sgt. Brice Nihiser advises drivers—check their mirrors and drive defensively while officers look to remove impaired drivers from busy roads.  WDTN
  • Springfield is asking residents for input on spending about $11 million in federal funds over the next five years, with survey responses since May 6 highlighting needs for health care, street repairs, and affordable housing. The city scheduled a town hall meeting for 10:30 a.m. June 14 at Fire Station 8 on South Limestone St—draft plans will be available on June 9 for further public comment.  Springfield News-Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kettering Health’s system-wide technology outage, caused by a cybersecurity incident, has disrupted pre-surgery testing and treatment appointments for patients including those with cancer. The hospital plans to provide daily updates starting this weekend—patients are advised to attend scheduled appointments until notified otherwise.  Springfield News-Sun

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The city said it could provide police, fire, water/sewer, and other services—this approval was only for services and not a vote to allow the proposed 100-home subdivision north of town. Some local residents opposed the plan due to concerns over property values, wildlife, and overcrowded schools while developers promised that the new single-family homes would match the area's look and that traffic impacts would be studied before moving ahead.  Springfield News-Sun
