COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Springfield women are gathering signatures (with support from Conserve Ohio) to propose a constitutional amendment banning mega-data centers that use over 25 megawatts monthly. They cite health, noise, and water concerns as new centers remain under review.  Springfield News-Sun

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Graeter's teams up with Kings Island + the ride-inspired ice cream flavor blends grape, soft marshmallow and marshmallow cookie dough and will debut soon at select Springfield shops.  WHIO
  • A local small business announced on Monday, May 25 that it will close after operating for over a decade because it can no longer afford the costs. The owner said the decision was the hardest they have faced.  WHIO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Conscious Connect CDC will unveil an Ohio Historical Marker honoring Thomas William Burton, Springfield’s first Black physician, on Saturday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at Rocking Horse Community Health Center (651 S. Limestone St.). The marker is part of America 250 celebrations.  Springfield News-Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wittenberg University in Springfield is updating its academic structure with four new schools to modernize its curriculum and attract students, according to provost Brian Yontz. The university plans to boost local employer partnerships and alumni engagement while addressing financial challenges.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Northwestern High School valedictorian Maya Steele said graduating is both scary and a great achievement. She will attend Cedarville University to study allied health before pursuing a master’s in speech and language pathology.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield expects a drop in its general fund income tax revenue due to state law changes that let businesses claim 100% of COVID-era losses during an expanded look-back period, officials said at a city commission meeting on May 19. If passed, the change could cost $1.5–$2.5 million by year-end.  Springfield News-Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health officials confirmed a bat in Springfield tested positive for rabies on May 25. They advise residents to avoid handling bats and to call authorities immediately if bitten + report any bat sightings.  WHIO
