ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The historic St. John the Baptist Church, a key part of the community, was engulfed in flames on May 30 and the Archdiocese remains hopeful to save the building—officials are assessing the damage.  WHIO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • USA Skate Center in German Twp. is closing for its final weekend before a summer break as owners Tara and Rob Patterson retire and plan to reopen the rink with new owners in August. Families can enjoy a special event with free skating for children on Friday evening and a meet and greet on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.  Springfield News-Sun

CRIME NEWS

  • A Dayton woman was indicted by a grand jury on burglary charges after an incident on May 20 at 5:32 p.m.—the homeowner shot and killed her alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Brian Hinshaw, with doorbell camera footage supporting the account.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Elijah Thomas, 21, was indicted Tuesday on multiple charges including murder for fatally shooting Randy Graham on Buckeye Street in southeast Springfield on May 14 — police arrested him after reviewing video footage — and the investigation continues.  Springfield News-Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • This summer, the Springfield Jazz and Blues Festival in Springfield will feature Grammy-winning singer Cecile McLorin Salvant on Aug. 9 — the event also offers free parking, food trucks, shuttles between stages, and after-concert jam sessions at the State Theater. Organizers say the two-day festival, starting on Aug. 8, will include national and local acts along with a family-friendly children’s area.  Springfield News-Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new tool from the Ohio Auditor of State shows that most local school districts had good financial ratings in the 2023-2024 school year, with Springfield City Schools having one cautionary indicator for equity. However, a few districts like Mt. Healthy and Trimble Local Schools faced serious fiscal challenges+ leading to declared fiscal emergencies.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly have approved a two-week extension to the Ohio Sales Tax Holiday, which will run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 14. During the holiday families will shop in-store and online for qualifying items like school supplies and everyday essentials without paying state sales tax.  WDTN
