ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A large, suspicious fire broke out Thursday morning at a vacant industrial site near Kenton and Burt streets next to the railroad tracks, marking the second blaze in about 10 months as fire chief Jacob King said the fire likely was caused by human actions because utilities were off and no lightning struck, and firefighters and police reported no injuries.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield’s plan to switch from fixed routes to an on-demand micro-transit system is delayed as contract talks continue, leaving SCAT drivers and riders uncertain about future job security and service changes. A soft launch is scheduled for July 15th with a two-week overlap to help transition passengers+ the new service, which aims to offer direct-to-door rides at similar fares to the current system.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Springfield's income tax revenue has stayed flat after years of post-pandemic growth, so officials plan to limit spending until new revenue from a shift to RITA and residential development boosts the general fund in 2026—officials noted that the end of temporary federal funds has increased the strain on daily operations. The city will hold public budget meetings in November—community members can offer input during these sessions.  Springfield News-Sun
