COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way’s Executive Director Kerry Pedraza—after nearly 12 years in the role—will step down to serve as Clark State College Foundation’s executive director beginning Aug. 18; interim director Natalie Driscoll will take charge on Aug. 15 as the search for a permanent replacement begins.  Springfield News-Sun

  • Graeter’s Ice Cream launched a new flavor called Minty Brownie—made with a creamy mint base and chewy brownie chunks—available for a limited time at local locations and online. Caramel Pecan Cheesecake is set for release in mid-August as the next bonus flavor.  WDTN

CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield Police said 28-year-old Iesha Givens was fatally shot in her living room on E. Cecil Street on Wednesday around 3:45 p.m.—her boyfriend Marcus Hasan called 911 and said an argument led to the shooting and now faces charges for murder, felonious assault and domestic violence while held in Clark County Jail.  WHIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials met in Clark County to discuss a proposed 0.5% sales tax increase that would help fund a $100 million new public safety building and jail designed to meet state standards. A second hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 30 in Commission Chambers—residents shared both support and concerns about the future costs and services.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Gov. Mike DeWine said Springfield is stable today after an immigration surge stretched local health care and led to job losses when humanitarian parole ended on June 12. He warned that when TPS for Haitians ends on Sept. 2, the region may face further layoffs and economic strain + hospitals may see more requests for charitable care.  Springfield News-Sun
