ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A local BBQ restaurant in Springfield was struck by lightning yesterday at 2:02 p.m.—staff are now inspecting the damage and planning next steps. WHIO
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Governor Mike DeWine met with community leaders in Springfield and said local businesses such as McGregor Metal, Dole, and Torpe America may lose Haitian workers when Temporary Protected Status ends early next year — a change that could impact the area where about 15,000 Haitian immigrants live. WHIO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wittenberg University’s Hagen Center ended its civic internship program at the Springfield Museum of Art last Friday (its final event) as community partners, civic leaders and students gathered to mark the achievement. The program ran from late May to the end of July (highlighting community service) and has helped build lasting local connections. Springfield News-Sun
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sheriff Chris Clark said that the county jail built in 1977 is facing overcrowding and disrepair as it currently holds 208 inmates—41 over the recommended capacity—and struggles with inadequate space and aging facilities. He said that these issues force authorities to release nonviolent offenders to reserve space for violent criminals and hamper efforts to properly address inmate overdoses and addiction.
