CRIME NEWS

  • Eighteen individuals were indicted in Clark County Common Pleas Court this week for charges including breaking-and-entering, assault, and domestic violence — several of the accused are Springfield residents.  Springfield News-Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local lawmaker has proposed a bill that would let K-12 students take up to 3 mental health days each year to address their mental well-being. The proposal, introduced by State Senator Willis Blackshear Jr., requires schools to hold discussions with students, parents, and faculty, and supporters say it could boost academic performance+ well-being.  WHIO
  • The 7 Circle of Kindness school supply drive at two Walmart stores in Miami Valley collected donated notebooks, crayons, backpacks, and other supplies for Crayons to Classrooms to help teachers and students. The contributions supported over 140 local schools and more than 50,000 students, and organizers expected the donations to exceed last year’s total of $16,000 worth of supplies — a sign of strong community support for local education.  WHIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield’s new on-demand van service Field Trips launched July 15 and replaced SCAT buses on July 29 — early data shows it averages 300 rides a day and has nearly 2,000 rides completed with over 1,900 accounts created. Riders can book trips by app or phone, and the city with Via Transportation will continue outreach efforts to improve service.  Springfield News-Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • National data showed kindergarten vaccination rates fell last year and exemptions reached record highs+local officials in Springfield and surrounding counties reported similar declines that could lower community protection+health experts urge parents to consult their health providers to keep children safe.  Springfield News-Sun
