COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Mary Anne Riley was honored when the Conscious Connect CDC placed a neighborhood marker on Woodward Avenue near her home on Aug. 15—celebrating her long-time support for local parks and safety. The marker was a surprise for her 75th birthday and highlights her impact on the community. Springfield News-Sun
- ➤ Raging Bull Woodfired Pizza won the $5,000 grand prize at the Gourmet Food Truck Competition held over the weekend at Veteran’s Park, organized by the Springfield Rotary. The event featured over two dozen food trucks and raised funds for local charities. Springfield News-Sun
- ➤ Washington Township RecPlex closed its main entrance, men's and women's locker rooms, gym and pool for deep cleaning and improvements starting this week—visitors can still use the Fitness Entrance, Fitness Center and Track. The women's locker room reopened today while the men's remains closed with a reopening date to be announced and the pool closed until Sept 2. WHIO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Clark State College opened its doors on August 18 to welcome over 4,200 students for fall classes—showing a 10 percent rise in enrollment from last year. The college expects final enrollment to top 5,000 as students from Springfield, Beavercreek, Bellefontaine, Xenia and online join to pursue degrees, certificates and workforce training. - ➤ Springfield officials plan to lower greenhouse gas emissions by joining Power a Clean Future Ohio and will appoint Deputy Director Jason Via as coordinator if the proposal passes the next commission meeting—City Manager Bryan Heck said the nonprofit will offer technical help and guide the city to secure funds for cost savings.
