COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Paprika—a friendly 38-pound mixed breed—is Clark County Dog Shelter's Pet of the Week with an adoption fee of $22; the shelter is located at 5201 Urbana Road in Springfield.  Springfield News-Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vienna Teng, an acclaimed singer and pianist, will perform at the Clark State Performing Arts Center’s Kuss Auditorium on October 9 (7:30 p.m.) with guest Alex Wong, offering songs from her new EP and career favorites as part of a special Club Kuss concert experience.  Clark State College

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Springfield mentorship program started by Chris Wallace eight years ago teaches students key skills—conflict resolution and communication—to help them make better choices amid local challenges. It has grown from 10 students at one school to nearly 200 at nine schools as the city experienced close to a dozen homicides this year.  WHIO
  • Tecumseh Local Schools earned the second highest gap closing scores in Clark County on the 2024-25 state report card. Superintendent Paula Crew said the district improved its gap closing rating from 3 to 4 stars—raising the score from 39.7% to 46.6% while also showing gains in graduation and college-career readiness.  Springfield News-Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners plan to build a new jail and sheriff’s office on a 30-acre site along State Route 72 if a 20-year sales tax levy passes in November—research shows that nearly 450 beds are needed to keep different inmate types apart. Local resident Isaac Holbert, who has lived on Hedgely Road for over 30 years, raised concerns about extra taxes, potential environmental problems, and increased traffic accidents.  WHIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts urge Springfield residents to get breast cancer screenings this October as the American Cancer Society shows a 44% drop in death rates since the 1980s. They warn that Black women, who face later diagnoses and less access to care, must act early—regular checks can save lives.  WHIO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Area high schools are ranked highly in the latest OHSAA football computer ratings released Tuesday. Troy, Tippecanoe and Marion Local are ranked No.1 in their regions—top 12 teams qualify for playoffs with week 7 starting Thursday.  WHIO
  • Extra security measures will be in place for Wayne High School’s football game against Springfield on October 3 at Heidkamp Stadium—gates will open at 5 p.m. with limited ticket sales and extra law enforcement ensuring safety for all spectators.  WHIO

  • Pink Powder Puff 'Boo Away Cancer'

    The NE FFA will be holding our 13 Annual Pink Powder Puff event on Saturday, October 25th at 2:30 PM at Conover field to benefit the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark/Champaign Counties. Over the last 12 years, we have raised over $143,000 for the endowment. Along with the football games, we will have chicken and noodles in the concessions plus raffle and silent auction items, admission is just $5 per person.
