COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Springfield and local organizations will open a warming shelter at the Salvation Army on 15 S. Plum St.—it will open when temperatures fall to 32°F with regular hours from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m.—and during single-digit temperatures the shelter will operate 24 hours to provide meals and case management services.  WHIO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Local firefighters rescued a blind horse from a swimming pool on October 22 at 4:31 p.m.—the animal was safely removed without injuries.  WHIO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Clark State theater arts program will present a stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s 'To Kill a Mockingbird'—bringing the story to life with themes of family courage and justice. The play runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and Nov. 7 to 9 at Turner Studio Theatre; shows start at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.—tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students while Clark State students get one free ticket with their ID.  Clark State College

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and teachers at Lagonda Elementary in Springfield held a walk on Wednesday to honor first-grade teacher Laurie Hammontree, who celebrated five years cancer-free after a mammogram detected signs of breast cancer. Hammontree led the walk—decorating her hallway with pink ribbons—for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  WHIO

  • Pink Powder Puff 'Boo Away Cancer'

    The NE FFA will be holding our 13 Annual Pink Powder Puff event on Saturday, October 25th at 2:30 PM at Conover field to benefit the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark/Champaign Counties. Over the last 12 years, we have raised over $143,000 for the endowment. Along with the football games, we will have chicken and noodles in the concessions plus raffle and silent auction items, admission is just $5 per person.
