  • Nonprofit Life Untethered held its first Always On My Mind event on Thursday as a Valentine’s Day gift to 135 nursing home residents, *featuring Elvis impersonator Lonnie Jay Freeman, handmade cards, and treats provided by community volunteers*.  Springfield News-Sun
  • Nearly 500 stuffed toys have been donated today to local children in need. Community groups organized the drive to share love on Valentine’s Day.  WHIO

  • A local bookstore closed temporarily after sustaining smoke damage from a nearby fire last night & officials are assessing repair needs.  WHIO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Officials approved an Ohio Historical Marker honoring Dr. Thomas William Burton, Springfield’s first Black physician, to be installed at the Rocking Horse Community Health Center (across from the Brooks Lawrence marker placed in Nov. 2025) as part of the America 250 celebration, with dedication expected this spring or summer.  Springfield News-Sun
  • The Valentine Wedding Show is set for Feb. 21 at the Bushnell Event Center where 36 local vendors will offer free food, cake, wine and dress fittings along with wedding ideas and discounts to engaged couples (register free on Eventbrite; guests pay $5 at the door).  Springfield News-Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clark-Shawnee Local Schools approved a plan that cuts four teaching positions now and will remove additional staff, busing and athletics if the 1% earned income tax fails on upcoming May 5 and November ballots. The district will review class sizes and course offerings each year to match enrollment levels.  Springfield News-Sun
  • The local school board named a new president yesterday after a thorough review of candidates, marking a leadership change aimed at improving school operations.  WHIO
  • The Springfield Foundation created the Alma Faye Memorial Scholarship Fund for Springfield High School graduates in honor of late Alma Faye Marshall. The fund will provide scholarships for students attending college and vocational school who have local community service experience and are first-generation college students.  Springfield News-Sun

  • Dalton and Dolores Dean have celebrated 67 years of marriage built on trust and open communication after a blind date; they now reside at Brookdale Buck Creek assisted living facility and raised three children and many grandchildren (over a dozen).
